Defamation:
Defamation of character includes slander and libel. This is the publication of false statements about an individual that cause personal injury to the individual’s reputation or character. Libel is written defamation and slander is oral defamation. Publication occurs when the statement, either written or oral, or by electronic media, is received by at least one other person. Generally, the law requires that the false statements be intentional and proof of the truthfulness of the defamatory statement is generally a complete defense in a civil action for libel or slander. Opinions are not considered libel or slander, only factual misrepresentations.
